Seychelles X simprop.dll crashed FSX

Post by abwatson » Tue Nov 25, 2014 8:54 am

Greetings all :) I recently purchased and installed your Seychelles X scenery. Immediately after installation FSX would load to the Select Flight screen but as soon as I pressed the Load button FSX closed immediately. I know this has to be associated with the Seychelles scenery as I have not seen simprop.dll as a faulting module before. Here is the Event Data.

- EventData

fsx.exe
10.0.61637.0
46fadb14
simprop.dll
10.0.61472.0
475e180d
c0000409

01d00874e05a9850
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\fsx.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\simprop.dll
db0985db-7468-11e4-bede-00106055b06f

There have been no previous posts on this error so it may well be unique to my PC.
Specs
Intel Core i7-3770K CPU O/C to 4.2Ghz (was 4.4Ghz before upgrade from Win 8 to 8.1)
32Gb RAM
Windows 8.1 64-bit
2 x AMD Radeon HD 790s in Crossfire

How do I know it is something related to the Seychelles X scenery? I uninstalled it after the simprop error and FSX is stable again. Your advice appreciated.

Hi,

this is an unknown issue indeed, and I wouldn't expect it to be related to Sey X. But since it came after you installed Sey X, it might be related to what the installer routine did in the FSX files.
First of all, uninstall the scenery and start FSX. If the error is gone, reinstall Sey X again.

Okay Thorsten, here's an update on what I've done. Seychelles Scenery uninstalled using Programs Control Panel. Two flights completed with no issues after that. Scenery reinstalled a few minutes ago using Administrator privileges this time, FSX loads to Free Flight screen and on clicking Load button - Microsoft Flight Simulator has stopped working. Here is the Even Log for your information -

I know my way around Flight Simulator having used it since V5.1 and am quite competent in solving issues like this. If you Google FSX simprop.dll you'll find it is a known issue but is not one I've experienced before. The recommended action includes doing a rebuild of FSX and Acceleration but because my FSX is 274Gb in size. Yes, I have a lot of aircraft and scenery installed.

Now, I just checked the Properties of the FSX Folder to get that size information and notice that its flagged Read only. I'm just removing that now and on a hunch will uninstall and reinstall Seychelles to a not Read Only Folder and see what happens. I'll get back to you. Cheers :)

Good to know you're an experienced user, this will make solving this unexpected issue a lot easier. :)
Problems with the simprop.dll are indeed mostly related to actual FSX/Acceleration issues, so I wouldn't expect it to be related to Sey X, but since it only occurs for you if you installed Sey X, there seems to be a link.
If you don't succeed with what you described, please backup the Seychelles X scenery folder (with scenery and texture subfolder) as well as the effect files (10 fx files and 6 bmp files in the effects/texture folder), then uninstall Sey X and add the files back into your clean FSX.
The only 2 reasons I could think of that could probably cause the issue are the additions to the default.xml (you could add those manually, I could tell you how) or the AI Twin Otter in the Simobjects Airplanes folder.

Greetings :) I've had a breakthrough on the simprop.dll issue tonight. Having uninstalled Seychelles X a day or two ago and after confirming FSX functioned normally, tonight I write-protected the working simprop.dll file and reinstalled Seychelles X (for the third time). Yes, you guessed it, third time lucky. I'm sitting on the Apron at FSIA with all scenery looking as it should. No error(s) on starting FSX. Let's not get ahead of ourselves though. I'll need to load other situation files before I'm confident that the issue is permanently fixed. I'll get back to you :)

I have no idea what this should have fixed the problem - but if it did, good to know! The install routine should not touch the dll at all, but you never know, that file caused a lot of trouble already, if you look through flightsim forums...

It is my solemn duty to report that the simprop.dll error has returned, just when I thought I'd beaten it. Here are tonight's three Error Logs:

Information on the Exception Code 0xc0000409 is a bit ambiguous but it appears that this error is a regular occurrence with FSX. I don't expect you to spend too much time on this if it's only happening on my PC. I'll just have to uninstall it and use By Colin Penney's scenery. A pity because I got a glimpse of Aerosoft's last night and it looks great but I've been a Simmer long enough to know that problems, often unsolvable, do crop up. Cheers :)

Well, I rarely saw bugs that couldn't be fixed. For this, I would have to ask you to contact the Aerosoft support, though, as it seems, the install routine is doing something to the simulator here.

You can always backup the installed files and uninstall the scenery, before manually copying them back. But I'd have to give you specific instructions how to get the whole thing into your FSX without the installer.

Okay, I'll try anything once but will leave it until the silly season is behind us. One thing I'd like them to try which I'll wager they haven't is to install Seychelles X on a PC that has been updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and see what result they get. I'll get in touch with Aerosoft Support in the New Year and see if they can enlighten us. Thanks for your assistance thus far. Season's Greetings :)
